Pasykaf

Clothing Recycling

Year founded: 1986

Website: https://pasykaf.org/en/home-page/

The Pancyprian Association of Cancer Patients and Friends, or ΠΑΣΥΚΑΦ, began in 1986 as a group of volunteers and former cancer patients dedicated to aiding cancer patients and raising awareness about cancer-related issues. Their mission has since expanded to offer various support services, including home care, socio-psychological support, and free transportation to medical centres, all funded by donations and charity events.

In 2013, ΠΑΣΥΚΑΦ initiated a clothing recycling program for two main reasons: to generate income and reduce clothing waste. The program started successfully, leading to an increasing number of donated items. To enhance this effort, ΠΑΣΥΚΑΦ partnered with a foreign company to operate a clothing recycling program.

Initially, they placed 30 recycling bins in 2013, but by 2018, around 400 recycling bins were spread across Cyprus, highlighting the impressive growth of ΠΑΣΥΚΑΦ’s recycling initiative. This expansion not only aids the association financially but also plays a crucial role in reducing clothing waste and benefiting the environment.

Agia Skepi

Social inclusion & Rehabilitation

Year founded: 1999

Website: https://www.agiaskepi.org/

Agia Skepi is a foundation established in 1999 to support individuals dealing with long-term substance abuse and their families. It’s located on 50 acres of land near Nicosia, generously provided by the Holy Abbey of Machaira. Financial support comes from the Association of Friends of Agia Skepi, all aimed at helping people overcome drug and alcohol addiction.

One vital part of Agia Skepi’s program is to help its members reintegrate into society through meaningful employment. Since 2011, community members have been farming the land and producing organic products like fruits, vegetables, dairy, eggs, and bread. However, the demand often exceeds the supply, so they also import dry foods, which community members package. These products are sold under the brand name “Agia Skepi Bio” in major supermarkets in Nicosia and Limassol.

What makes Agia Skepi special is its shared values between organic farming and rehabilitation. These values include a commitment to sustainability, hard work, respect for nature, and pride in individual accomplishments. It’s a heart-warming effort to help people recover while also respecting the environment and promoting personal growth and dignity.
